I Wonder...

Hey Pastor!  Please translate Methodist jargon.  What is a district, conference, & global denomination?

It might help to picture the Methodist movement as a Russian matryoshka or nesting doll, with the local church as the smallest, innermost doll.  The United Methodist Church in Osterville is one of 60 churches in the Rhode Island, Southeastern Massachusetts (RISEM) District.  All 60 churches are cared for by our District Superintendent, the Rev. Dr. Andrew Foster.  The RISEM District is one of nine geographic districts that make up the New England Annual Conference, which includes Eastern Connecticut, all of Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont, more than 600 churches.  Bishop Sudarshana Devadhar, with the cabinet (District Superintendents), provides leadership for all of our churches, including making appointments (sending each local church a pastor).  Our Conference is part of the Northeastern Jurisdiction, which is part of the global movement, The United Methodist Church, which holds all of the Conferences, Districts, and local churches under one shared Discipline (the beliefs, rules, polity and practice of our church).
